On November 8, 2007, the Santa Maria Police Council donated nearly $10,000 to the Santa Maria Police Department for the  purchase 12 Tasers. The check presentation was held at the Santa Maria Police Department training classroom at 222 E. Cook Street. at 2 p.m. at the department training classroom, 222 E. Cook St.

The nonprofit Santa Maria Police Council formed in August 2007 to serve as the department's fundraising arm, allowing purchase of safety materials and equipment that the regular budget can't cover.

The council’s first priority is to supply the department with 80 tasers to equip each officer with a taser and holster. Other planned purchases include more tasers and other less lethal weapons, forensic lab equipment, and bulletproof blankets.

Police council membership costs $200 for an individual or $250 for a family or business. Lifetime membership costs $2,000 for an individual or $2,500 for a family or business.
